Dans les années vingt, les montagnes aurassiennes sont l’une des régions les plus pauvres de l’Algérie, souvent ravagée par les longs hivers, la famine et les maladies. Brahim, maître artisan, est l’un des hommes les plus aisés du pays. Marié à Makhla, puis à Gamra, il prend pour troisième femme Fadah, une belle et jeune femme de 20 ans, espérant que celle-ci lui donnera enfin un héritier avant qu’il ne soit trop vieux. Contrainte d’épouser Brahim, Fadah rejoint les deux autres femmes dans un monde fermé et coupé de l’extérieur à jamais. Seul Brahim se rend en ville une fois par mois pour se ravitailler et livrer ses poteries. Puis un jour, Brahim engage un jeune vagabond pour travailler dans sa propriété. Quelques mois plus tard, Fadah montre les premiers signes d’une grossesse certaine.

synopsis
The story takes place in the 1920s in the remote Aurassian mountains in Eastern Algeria, an area that is frequently devastated by long winters, famine, and disease. Brahim, a master craftsman, is one of the wealthiest men in the region. Married to Makla then Gamra, who fail to bear him children, he decides to marry for the third time, hoping that this wife will provide him with an heir before he is too old. Forced to marry the aging Brahim, Fadah, a beautiful, healthy twenty-years-old woman, join the two other wives in a household that is cut off from the rest of the community. Only Brahim has contact with others and leaves to go to the village once a month to deliver his pottery and buy supplies. One day, Brahim hires a young man, Hemna, to do work on the property. A few months later, Fadah shows all signs of pregnant woman…
