Rolando Colla est né à Schaffhouse (Suisse) en 1957 de parents italiens immigrés. Il obtient la citoyenneté suisse en 1977 à Zürich. Diplômé de la Faculté des Lettres de l’Université de Zürich, il est actif dans l’industrie du cinéma depuis 1983, travaillant comme scénariste, acteur et producteur. Il fonde la compagnie Peacock Film en 1984, qu’il codirige actuellement avec la productrice Elena Pedrazzoli, et au nom de laquelle il réalisera plusieurs films commerciaux de commande, des courts et des longs-métrages de fiction mais également des documentaires. Il remportera plusieurs prix, notamment celui de la meilleure oeuvre publicitaire du concours fédéral EDI en 1988, 1995, 1999 et 2000. Rolando Colla est membre de l’Association suisse des réalisateurs de film.
Son oeuvre cinématographique se caractérise par un engagement social et politique marqué. Rolando Colla condamne notamment de manière virulente le durcissement des lois sur l’asile en Suisse et dans les pays occidentaux, et dresse un portrait incisif et fort des conséquences que ces politiques opèrent sur la situation sociale, économique et culturelle des personnes concernées, et leur impact sur les relations humaines.
