Jenna Bass

Réalisatrice, scénariste et productrice sud-africaine.

La sud-africaine Jenna Bass (née en 1987) est cinéaste, écrivaine, photographe et également magicienne. Après ses études d’illusionnisme au College of Magic du Cap et de l’école du film AFDA, elle réalise son premier court-métrage The Tunnel (2010), qui est sélectionné à Berlin, au Sundance Film Festival et au Focus Features Africa First Short Film Program. En 2014, elle tourne et produit Love the One You Love, son premier long, avec un budget microscopique, qui remporte des prix pour la meilleure actrice, long-métrage sud-africain et meilleure réalisatrice au Durban International Film Festival. Jenna Bass est rédactrice en chef et cocréatrice de « Jungle Jim », un magazine pulp illustré présentant des histoires-fictions africaines. Actuellement, elle collabore à un projet en réalité virtuelle avec l’artiste Olivié Keck et les développeurs de jeux vidéo sud-africains Free Lives. Flatland (2019) est son troisième long-métrage.

Née à Londres, Royaume-Uni, en 1986, elle grandit en Afrique du Sud où elle vit maintenant. Elle est une cinéaste diplômée de l’AFDA, école de cinéma basée à Cape Town. Son court métrage The Tunnel a été projeté à la Berlinale 2010, son premier long métrage Love the One You Love a été présenté dans le nombreux festivals internationaux. High Fantasy a fait sa première au Festival International du Cinéma de Toronto en 2017 et projeté à la Berlinale (section Génération) en 2018. Avec Wanuri Kahiu, elle a co-écrit la romance adolescence Rafiki qui a sa première à Cannes en 2018.

A 22 ans, elle signe THE TUNNEL (2009), un film de 25 minute tourné durant les massacres de Gukurahundi au Zimbabwé en 1980, et un des 5 films réalisés au sein du Programme de Courts métrages « Focus Features Africa First ».

Her short film The Tunnel screened at the 2010 Berlinale, her debut feature Love the One You Love was presented at numerous international festivals. High Fantasy premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017 and screened in Generation in 2018. Jenna Bass is a South African writer, filmmaker and former magician. Her award winning films include the short, THE TUNNEL (2010), and the collaboratively-created features LOVE THE ONE YOU LOVE (2014) and HIGH FANTASY (2017), which have screened around the world, including at the Sundance, Berlinale and Toronto Film Festivals. Together with, Wanuri Kahiu, Jenna co-wrote the coming-of-age romance, RAFIKI, which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2018. FLATLAND (2019) is Jenna’s third feature film as a director and writer.

Jenna Bass was born in South Africa. Her debut short, The Tunnel (10), screened at Sundance and was later included in the anthology Africa First: Volume One (11). She has also directed the feature Love the One You Love (14). High Fantasy (17) is her most recent film.

JENNA BASS is THE TUNNEL’s writer, director, unwilling producer and general responsible person. She is a director, writer, photographer, aspiring explorer and retired magician living in Cape Town, South Africa. She says « wow » a lot, dislikes money and excel, likes tofu ice-cream and thinks werner herzog should have won the oscar.
