Fatih Akin

Réalisateur, scénariste et producteur allemand et turc.

Né en 1973 à Hambourg de parents turcs, Fatih Akin étudie la communication visuelle aux Beaux Arts de Hambourg en 1994. Il commence dans le cinéma en tant qu’acteur tout en cherchant à passer derrière la caméra. Wueste Film lui donne cette chance en l’engageant. En 1995, son premier court-métrage Sensin – Du bist es! est remarqué au festival du court-métrages de Hambourg et reçoit le prix du public. Son deuxième court-métrage Getuerkt (1996) confirme son talent, et obtient plusieurs prix dans différents festivals internationaux. Ce qui lui permet de passer au long métrage avec Kurz und Schmerlos (1998), où il s’inspire du style de Martin Scorsese pour décrire l’univers de trois petits mafieux, amis d’enfance à Hambourg. Ce film est également récompensé, à Locarno notamment.

A la manière de Woody Allen, il tourne un film tous les ans. Il enchaîne donc très vite avec Julie en juillet où il aborde pour la première fois une histoire d’amour. Passionné par la thématique du déracinement, il s’intéresse à la vie d’une famille italienne en Allemangne dans Solino (2002). Puis il approfondit les relations amoureuses conflictuelles dans Head-on en 2003, qui le fait définitivement remarquer de la profession. Visiblement marqué par ce dernier film, il tourne un film sur le compositeur qu’il avait engagé pour la BO, Crossing the bridge – the sound of Istanbul, qui est présenté hors compétition dans plusieurs festivals prestigieux en 2005.

Fatih Akin is a German filmmaker of Turkish origin. He won the Golden Bear for HEAD ON in 2004 and became one of the most influential European directors. He was 30 years old at that point. At that time he had already completed Film school, two short-films, one documentary about his parents’ migration from Turkey to Hamburg and three feature films.

He achieved his following international success with the drama THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (2007) for which he won the price for BEST SCREENPLAY at Festival de Cannes. The film also received The European Film Award and German Film Award.

For his following film SOUL KITCHEN (2009) Fatih Akin was honoured with the SPECIAL PRIZE OF THE JURY at the Venice Film Festival. With his production company corazón international, founded in 2004, he has produced several films alongside his own productions, including the internationally successful films CHIKO, TAKVA and MIN DÎT. Fatih Akin has been directing his films exclusively for bombero international since 2012. THE CUT was shot in 2013 in Cuba, Canada, Jordan and Germany and is the first bombero international film release.


THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (AUF DER ANDEREN SEITE) is Fatih Akin’s fifth fiction feature and makes its world premiere in Competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. 2005’s CROSSING THE BRIDGE – THE SOUND OF ISTANBUL presented the variety of music found in contemporary Turkey. 2003’s HEAD-ON (GEGEN DIE WAND) won the Berlinale Golden Bear, as well as Best Film at the German and European Film Awards.
Fatih Akin was born in 1973 in Hamburg of Turkish parentage. While studying Visual Communications at Hamburg’s College of Fine Arts, he wrote and directed his first short in 1995: SENSIN – YOU’RE THE ONE! (SENSIN – DU BIST ES!), which received the Audience Award at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival, followed by WEED (GETUERKT, 1996). His first feature, SHORT SHARP SHOCK (KURZ UND SCHMERZLOS, 1998), won Locarno’s Bronze Leopard and the Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Director.
