Gurinder CHADHA est une scénariste, réalisatrice et productrice.
Elle est connue pour « Bhaji on the Beach » (1993), « Bend it Like Beckham », « Bride and Prejudice (Coup de foudre à Bollywood) », « Angus », « Thongs and Perfect Snogging », « It’s a Wonderful Afterlife », « Viceroy’s House », « Blinded by the Light ».
Née au Kenya, Gurinder Chadha est arrivée en 1961 en Grande-Bretagne et a grandi à Southall, quartier de Londres situé à proximité d’Heathrow, qui abrite aujourd’hui encore une forte population d’Indiens et de Pakistanais. Elle est mariée à Paul Mayeda Berges, Américain d’origine japonaise, qui a écrit les scénarios de quelques-uns de ses films. Le couple partage son temps entre Londres et Los Angeles.
Gurinder Chadha a abordé un thème cher à la diaspora indienne dès BHAJI ON THE BEACH (1993) : ce film parle des conflits entre générations, de l’adaptation à une autre société et des tensions entre la vie familiale et le quotidien des jeunes dans l’Angleterre d’aujourd’hui. Elle a remporté un grand succès en Europe et aux Etats-Unis en 2002 avec son film BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM (JOUE-LA COMME BECKHAM). Ce film raconte l’histoire d’une jeune fille d’une famille d’immigrants indiens qui joue en secret dans un club de football, ce qui provoque un conflit avec ses parents.
BRIDE AND PREJUDICE (le titre français est « Coup de foudre à Bollywood ») est tiré du roman éponyme de Jane Austen (Orgueil et préjugés), il s’agit d’une version bollywoodienne avec la grande star Aishwarya Rai dans le rôle principal. Ce film a été accueilli avec une certaine fraîcheur par le public et la critique tant en Occident qu’en Inde.

Gurinder CHADHA is a screenwriter, film director and producer.
She is known for « Bhaji on the Beach » (1993), « Bend it Like Beckham », « Bride and Prejudice », « Angus », « Thongs and Perfect Snogging », « It’s a Wonderful Afterlife », « Viceroy’s House », « Blinded by the Light ».
Born in Kenya, she began her career making documentaries for the BBC. She then moved into fictional feature filmmaking with her extraordinary debut « Bhaji on the Beach » (1993), a groundbreaking movie that showed a group of British women on screen from different faiths and backgrounds in ways that had never been seen on screen before. If that wasn’t different enough, her next film, « Bend it Like Beckham » (still the highest-grossing film revolving around football and the only film to be released in every country in the world including North Korea), was a smash hit that was way ahead of its time in how it put women’s football at the heart of the story. It also set the template for the charming way Chadha uses humour and goodwill to build cultural bridges in her stories. This goodwill approach would become her trademark, and Chadha has gone from strength to strength with her films « Bride and Prejudice », « Angus », « Thongs and Perfect Snogging », « It’s a Wonderful Afterlife », « Viceroy’s House », and « Blinded by the Light ». She’s also worked on television with Desi Rascals and Beecham House. She received an OBE for services to the British cinema globally.
