English

Ubuntu is a philosophy that lies at the core of the Cape Town Festival, born from a sincere desire to create an environment where culturally diverse communities can understand each other and ultimately live in harmony together.

History

The Cape Town Festival, born from an initiative by the chairperson, Ryland Fisher, called the’One City Many Cultures Project’ started in 1999 as the One City Festival.

The City of Cape Town supported the initiative in accordance with its mandate to create tolerance and understanding amongst the many different cultures through hosting a city festival. Through a series of democratic processes the One City Events Company, a section 21 company was formed in 2000. The Company was registered in 2002, and a Board was created, comprising of arts related individuals, event managers and city councillors.

In 2003, the company was restructured under a newly appointed CEO and a new board was formed that comprised of business leaders and city management representatives. The new board changed the focus of the festival to achieve financial sustainability. The company has since undergone an organizational re-engineering process, the purpose of which was to arrive at the company’s key competences and focus areas
