Ce documentaire essai MAJUB’S JOURNEY (LE VOYAGE DE MAJUB) raconte d’un homme africain qui vivait dans l’Allemagne nazi des années 30 et a travaillé comme figurant dans l’industrie du cinéma. Il est né dans la colonie allemande de Deutsch-Ostafrika (Tanganyika /Rwanda / Burundi) [de nos jours : Tanzanie, Rwanda, Burundi]et – alors qu’il n’avait que neuf ans – il est devenu soldat pour les Allemands pendant la 1ère Guerre Mondiale.
Quand les Allemands perdirent la guerre (et leurs colonies), ces derniers ne lui payèrent pas sa solde de guerre. Environ une décennie plus tard, il décida de se rendre en Allemagne et réclamer personnellement son argent.
Ce film nous raconte son histoire – son enfance dans la colonie et sa vie dans l’Allemagne nazi – en y englobant les trous que les archives laissent béantes.

The essayistic documentary MAJUB’S JOURNEY tells the story of an African man who lived in Nazi Germany during the 1930s and worked as an extra in the movie industry. He was born in the German colony Deutsch-Ostafrika (Tanganjika / Ruanda / Burundi) [today: Tanzania, Ruanda, Burundi] and became a soldier for the Germans during World War I – when he was only nine years old.
After the Germans lost the war, they failed to hand him his military pay. About a decade later he decides to travel to Germany and personally collect his outstanding money.

This film tells his story – his childhood in the colony and his life and in Nazi Germany – including the holes that the archive leaves open

Meticulously researched facts, circumstantial evidence and the reflections they give rise to form the energetic center of this amazing biography of the African Majub on the background of German film and colonial history. Majub, born in Daressalam and a German colonial soldier in the First World War, was a popular extra and bit player in 1930s German cinema. You won’t see him from a distance, because then you will only notice the light of the « A-list » artists. But if you come closer and the B- and C-category stars begin to twinkle, each of them shining forth as part of a constellation, the world will open up wide and art will be enriched. In that sense, director Eva Knopf’s idea to have her film begin in an observatory is heartbreakingly beautiful.

„Majubs Reise zu den Sternen »anhand von Archivmaterial die Geschichte des Söldners Mohamed Husen, der in den 1930er Jahren von Tansania nach Berlin überschiffte. Er möchte seinen Sold einfordern und sein Glück als Statist und Sprachlehrer versuchen. Bald stehen jedoch anfängliche Kolonialinteressen für die Nationalsozialisten nicht mehr im Vordergrund und Husens Suaheli-Kenntnisse wurden nicht mehr gebraucht. Er gerät immer stärker in Konflikt mit den Behörden und wird schließlich ins KZ Sachsenhausen deportiert.

Eva Knopf erzählt in ihrem Diplomfilm

Es ist höchst unwahrscheinlich, dass irgendjemand den Namen Majub bin Adam Mohamed Hussein alias Mohamed Husen wirklich präsent hätte. Majub, gebürtig in Daressalam und deutscher Kolonial-Soldat im Ersten Weltkrieg, war während der 1930er Jahre vielbeschäftigter Statist und Kleindarsteller im deutschen Kino. Fast immer, wenn es in Filmen der Nazizeit einen Schwarzen brauchte, war es Majub, den man Hans Albers, Heinz Rühmann oder Zarah Leander zur Seite stellte.
Akribisch recherchierte Fakten, eine Reihe von Indizien und die daraus aufsteigenden (von Jule Böwe vorgetragenen) gedanklichen Verknüpfungen bilden das Energiezentrum dieser fantastischen Biografie des Afrikaners Majub im Zusammenhang der deutschen Film- und Kolonialgeschichte. Majub, der 1944 in Sachsenhausen starb, ist Teil eines Sternenhimmels des deutschen Films. Aus der Entfernung wird man ihn dort nicht sehen, denn von weitem leuchten nur die „ersten »Künstler, deren große Namen einem meist genügen. Wenn man aber diesem Himmel näher tritt, wenn die Sterne der zweiten und dritten Kategorie nun auch zu glitzern anfangen und ein jeder als Teil des ganzen Sternbildes hervortritt, dann wird die Welt weit und die Kunst reich. Insofern ist es eine herzzerreißend schöne Idee der Regisseurin Eva Knopf, ihren Film in einer Sternwarte beginnen zu lassen.
