Patrick Clément, cadre dans une grande banque, marié et père de famille, vient d’être licencié. Mamadou Sylla, Africain immigré, éboueur de son état, père de deux enfants, est lui aussi licencié. Pour trouver un logement et demeurer en France, il multiplie les démarches administratives en vain. Tous les matins, Patrick Clément se rend à l’ANPE. Mais rien ! Il va de plus en plus au bistrot et sympathise avec une bande de jeunes désœuvrés. Rentrant tard et saoul toutes les nuits, sa femme, handicapée, découvre la vérité sur les véritables activités de son mari mais il est trop tard. Patrick a trop joué avec l’intolérable…
