1516. Alger est alors une petite république arabo-berbère, asphyxiée par les Espagnols qui contrôlent le port depuis six ans. Le Roi Salim Toumi s’allie au corsaire Barberousse pour libérer la ville. Après la victoire, Salim est assassiné dans son bain. Barberousse devient le nouveau maître d’Alger, et doit faire face à la rébellion. L’histoire, et la légende, racontent aussi que Salim Toumi, dernier Roi d’Alger, avait une épouse nommée Zaphira, et qu’Aroudj Barberousse la désirait. Barberousse aurait dit : « Je prendrai son palais, monterai son cheval, et sa femme ».

Note d’intention
Le film se situe au 16ème siècle à Alger. Une période de bouleversement politique, social et identitaire qui va voir émerger le fondement d’un nouvel Alger. Comment donner vie à cette partie de l’histoire trop longtemps ignorée, et comment raconter l’histoire de cette Dernière Reine, dont l’existence-même n’a cessé d’être contestée puis soutenue par les historiens à travers les siècles ? Le récit romanesque et baroque est racontée d’un point de vue féminin et tente de saisir cette parole effacée, pour explorer l’Histoire autrement. Prendre le large, partir loin dans le temps, dans une Alger métissée, ambitieuse, aventurière, pour revenir et secouer l’Algérie contemporaine, lui rafraîchir la mémoire, fouetter son désir et son imaginaire.

It is the year 1516. Algiers is a small Arabian-Berber republic, suffocated by the Spaniards, who have had control of the harbour for six years. King Salim Toumi makes an alliance with the pirate Barberousse in order to free the city. After their victory, Salim is assassinated in his bathtub. Barberousse becomes the new ruler of Algiers, and is confronted with a rebellion. Both history and legend tell that Salim Toumi, the last King of Algiers, had a wife named Zaphira, and that Aroudj Barberousse desired her. Barberousse is supposed to have said: « I will take his palace, and I will mount his horse and his wife. »

Statement
The film is set in 16th century Algiers. This was a time of political and social upheaval, an identity crisis, out of which emerged the foundations of a new Algiers. How can we bring to life this period of history that has been ignored for so long, and how can we tell the story of this Last Queen, this woman whose very existence has never ceased to be both disputed and upheld by historians through the centuries? The novelistic and baroque narrative is told from the female point of view, attempting to capture these expunged voices, in order to explore history from a different angle. To travel far back in time, back to a multi-cultural, ambitious and adventurous Algiers; in order to return and shake up contemporary Algeria, to refresh her memory and stir up her desire and her imagination.

In 1516, Algerian king Salim Toumi accepted the help of feared pirate Aroudj Barbarossa to liberate Algiers from Spanish occupation, only to die in mysterious circumstances in his own hammam once the city was secure. The next day, Barbarossa proposed marriage to Salim’s Queen Zaphira, having already vowed to his crew that he intended to take Salim’s palace, horse and wife. Zaphira – who may or may not have existed but whose passion and determination became the stuff of legend – proved more than a match for him. Adila Bendimarad, who plays Zaphira, co-directs with Damien Ounouri; the cast, drawn mainly from the theatre, use their stagecraft and linguistic skills to accentuate the film’s poetic language. It’s an exciting Arab take on a classic historical epic, with all the grandeur, thrilling swordplay and sumptuous costuming we expect of the sword-and-sandals genre, given the fresh twist of a woman’s point of view. This film is supported by the Red Sea Fund.
