Safi Faye

Née le 22 Novembre 1943 à Fad'jal ou à Dakar (Sénégal), Safi Faye est enseignante quand Jean Rouch lui propose de jouer dans Petit à petit en 1971. Elle est la première femme africaine à se lancer dans la réalisation de films.

A Paris, elle étudie le cinéma et l'ethnographie et réalise en 1972 son premier court métrage, La passante. En 1975, elle tourne un long métrage, Lettre paysanne (Kaddu Beykat), traitant des problèmes économiques du monde rural. Son deuxième long métrage, Fad'jal (1979), tourné dans son village natal et qui reçoit le Prix George Sadoul 1975 et de nombreux autres prix, traite de l'opposition entre tradition et modernité.

Diplômée de l'Ecole Normale de Rufisque (Sénégal), elle a suivi des études d'ethnologie à l'EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris). Elle soutient en 1979 un doctorat de 3e cycle sur la religion des Sérères. Elle a étudié le cinéma à l'école Louis Lumière (France) en 1979-1980.

Safi Faye travaille également pour des programmes internationaux de télévision, notamment Goob Na Nu (La récolte est finie) et Man Sa Yay (Moi, ta mère) (1979), Souls in the sun (Les âmes au soleil) (1981) et Selbe and So many others (Selbé parmi tant d'autres) (1982).

En 1997, elle présente Mossane au Fespaco tourné dix ans plus tôt et dont la sortie était retardé par un pénible conflit avec son producteur.

Born in 1943 in Fad'jal (Senegal), Safi Faye was a teacher when Jean Rouch asked her to play in Petit à petit in 1971. She is the first African woman to start making films. In Paris, she studied cinema and ethnography and in 1972 made her first short film, La passante. In 1975, she made a feature film, Lettre paysanne (Kaddu Beykat), about the economic problems of the rural world. His second feature film, Fad'jal (1979), made in his hometown and awarded the 1975 George Sadoul Prize and many other awards, deals with the opposition between tradition and modernity. A graduate of the Ecole Normale de Rufisque (Senegal), she studied ethnology at the EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris). In 1979 she holds a PhD in the religion of the Sérères. She studied cinema at the Louis Lumière school in 1979-1980. Safi Faye also works on international television programs, including Goob Na Nu (Harvest is Over) and Man Sa Yay (Me, Your Mother) (1979), Souls in the sun (1981) and Selbe and So many others (Selbé among many others) (1982). In 1997, she presented Mossane at the Fespaco shot ten years earlier and whose release was delayed by a painful conflict with its producer. She died on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 in Paris at the age of 80.
