Patrick Edlinger né le 15 juin 1960 à Dax et mort le 16 novembre 2012 à La Palud-sur-Verdon, est un grimpeur et alpiniste français.
Réputé pour ses ascensions en solo intégral, il est un des pionniers de l'escalade libre de haut niveau et a été, dans les années 1980, l'une des premières figures médiatiques de la discipline. Initié à l'escalade à l'âge de neuf ans, Patrick Edlinger pratique régulièrement à quatorze ans pour s'y consacrer pleinement à dix-huit ans. Passant ses journées en falaise, il lui arrive, faute de trouver des partenaires pour l'assurer, de grimper en solo. Avec son ami Patrick Berhault, il s'illustre par des réalisations difficiles pour l'époque, préfigurant une autre façon de grimper, où la dimension physique prime autant que l'état d'esprit.
En 1982, Patrick Edlinger fait connaître l'escalade au grand public grâce aux documentaires de Jean-Paul Janssen diffusés dans le monde entier : "La Vie Au Bout Des Doigts" et "Opéra Vertical". Il y escalade en libre et, pour partie, en solo intégral, des voies des fameux sites de Buoux (Luberon) et des gorges du Verdon. Edlinger y expose une philosophie de l'escalade où se mêlent hédonisme, respect et amour de la nature, dépassement de soi et goût du risque. Cette façon de vivre alliée à son physique d'éphèbe marqueront de manière profonde le public. À l'origine de l'engouement pour l'escalade, Patrick Edlinger, "Le Blond", n'est cependant pas qu'une figure médiatique, c'est un grimpeur de haut niveau, qui réalise des solos dans des voies cotées 8a et ouvre aussi des voies de difficulté extrême pour l'époque jusqu'au 8b+/8c.
Véritable star internationale, Patrick Edlinger est, dans les années 1980, la personnalité préférée des Français selon un sondage du magazine Paris Match, qui relaie ses exploits. Lorsque le Manifeste des 19 décriant la compétition est écrit en 1985, il ne le signe pas. En 1986, il gagne les premières compétitions internationales d'escalade à Bardonecchia, puis en 1988 à Snowbird dans l'Utah. À cette époque, il lance sa propre ligne de vêtement qu'il tient avec quelques amis. En 1988, une publicité est diffusée le mettant en scène pour faire la promotion des barres de céréales Grany; elle est reprise en 1998 puis en 2004. En juillet 1994, il participe à deux compétitions officielles UIAA : le master de L'Argentière où il termine 34e et le master de Serre Chevalier où il se place 17e. En 1995, Patrick Edlinger est victime d'un grave accident lors de l'escalade d'une falaise. Alors qu'il s'entraîne dans les calanques de Marseille sur une voie en 7b et qu'il a sauté plusieurs points d'assurance, une prise casse et il chute de dix-huit mètres. En arrêt cardiaque, il est réanimé par un médecin présent sur place et ne s'en tire finalement qu'avec quelques déchirures musculaires. Il se retire alors du haut niveau de l'escalade, mais continue à grimper dans le 8e degré pour le plaisir.
De 1997 à 2000, il est rédacteur en chef de la revue d'escalade Roc'n Wall, qui sera absorbée par la revue Vertical. Il cesse la pratique du solo à la naissance de sa fille en 2002 et à partir de 2009, il tient un gîte avec sa femme dans le Verdon. En 2011, il entame l'écriture de sa biographie avec la collaboration de son ami depuis 25 ans, Jean-Michel Asselin. Il meurt accidentellement le 16 novembre 2012 à son domicile de La Palud-sur-Verdon, à l'âge de 52 ans.

Patrick Edlinger, born June 15, 1960 in Dax and died November 16, 2012 in La Palud-sur-Verdon, was a French climber and mountaineer.
Renowned for his free solo ascents, he was one of the pioneers of high-level free climbing and, in the 1980s, was one of the first media figures in the discipline. Introduced to climbing at the age of nine, Patrick Edlinger practiced regularly at fourteen and devoted himself to it fully at eighteen. Spending his days at the cliffs, he sometimes climbed solo, unable to find partners to belay him. With his friend Patrick Berhault, he distinguished himself with achievements that were difficult for the time, foreshadowing a different way of climbing, where the physical dimension was as important as the state of mind.
In 1982, Patrick Edlinger introduced climbing to the general public through Jean-Paul Janssen's documentaries, broadcast worldwide: "Life at Your Fingertips" and "Vertical Opera." In them, he free climbed and, in part, free-soloed routes in the famous Buoux (Luberon) and Verdon Gorges. Edlinger expounded on a climbing philosophy that blended hedonism, respect and love for nature, self-improvement, and a taste for risk. This way of life, combined with his youthful physique, would have a profound impact on the public. Patrick Edlinger, "The Blond," was not just a media figure; he was also a high-level climber, soloing routes rated 8a and also blazing routes of extreme difficulty for the time, up to 8b+/8c.
A true international star, Patrick Edlinger was, in the 1980s, the favorite personality of the French according to a survey by Paris Match magazine, which relayed his exploits. When the Manifesto of the 19 denouncing competition was written in 1985, he did not sign it. In 1986, he won the first international climbing competitions in Bardonecchia, then in 1988 in Snowbird in Utah. At this time, he launched his own clothing line, which he ran with a few friends. In 1988, an advertisement was broadcast featuring him to promote Grany cereal bars; it was repeated in 1998 and again in 2004. In July 1994, he participated in two official UIAA competitions: the L'Argentière master where he finished 34th and the Serre Chevalier master where he placed 17th. In 1995, Patrick Edlinger suffered a serious accident while climbing a cliff. While training in the calanques of Marseille on a 7b route and having skipped several belay points, a hold broke and he fell eighteen meters. He went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by a doctor on site, ultimately surviving only with a few muscle tears. He then retired from high-level climbing, but continued to climb at grade 8 for pleasure.
From 1997 to 2000, he was editor-in-chief of the climbing magazine Roc'n Wall, which was later merged into Vertical magazine. He stopped free-soloing after the birth of his daughter in 2002, and since 2009, he has run a gîte with his wife in the Verdon region. In 2011, he began writing his biography with the collaboration of his friend of 25 years, Jean-Michel Asselin. He died accidentally on November 16, 2012 at his home in La Palud-sur-Verdon, at the age of 52.
