La musique a coutume d’accompagner étroitement l’ébullition sociale en Guadeloupe. Du 20 janvier au 4 mars 2009, l’île a connu 44 jours de grève générale, un intense mouvement de protestation : un air, repris en chœur par la foule, revenait sans cesse : « La Gwadloup sé tan nou, La Gwadloup sé pa ta yo » (La Guadeloupe est à nous, elle n’est pas à eux). Il a suscité une polémique : certains y ont entendu un cri de révolte, tandis que d’autres l’ont perçu comme un chant raciste.

Music was often closely linked to social riots in Guadeloupe. From January 20th till March 4th 2009, there was a 44 day long general strike on the island, an intense protest movement: an air returned ceaselessly, « Guadeloupe belongs to us, it does not belong to them ». It aroused a strong debate: some people heard a shout of revolt, whereas others perceived it as a racist song.
