Deux ans après le sursaut d’espoir suscité par la révolution égyptienne en 2011, des élections libres ont lieu mais sont suivies par une reprise du pouvoir par les militaires. L’Egypte retourne à son état de dictature initial, laissant grandes ouvertes les plaies d’une révolution détournée. Amal, jeune fille de 14 ans, est traînée par les cheveux par un policier au milieu de la place Tahrir. Une vidéo de cette violence devient virale partout dans le monde sans qu’on  sache qui est la jeune fille dont le visage est caché par les bâtons et les chaussures des soldats. Après que les dernières manifestations aient eu lieu et que le cirque médiatique ait déserté la place Tahrir, le réalisateur décide de suivre la jeune Amal dans son voyage initiatique à travers son retour à l’école, sa découverte de l’amour et de la sexualité mais aussi sa façon de vivre le port du voile, sa dépression, sa tentative de suicide jusqu’à l’obligation de se conformer à la société conservatrice.

Amal is 14 years old when she ends up on Tahrir Square during the Egyptian revolution, after the death of her boyfriend in the Port Said Stadium riot. During the protests, she is beaten by police and dragged across the square by her hair. This coming-of-age film follows her over the years after the revolution. As the film cuts between the unfolding current events and Amal’s rapidly changing life and appearance, we see her searching for her own identity in a country in transition. Amal is fiery and fearless, sinking her teeth into the protests and constantly lecturing her mother, who works as a judge. A girl among men, she also has to fight for respect and the right to take part, both in the street and in the rest of her life. In Egypt, even for a young woman like Amal-her name means « hope »-the choices open to her for her future are limited.

أمل

أمل فتاة مراهقة غاضبة، تبلغ سن الرشد في مصر الخارجة لتوها من ثورة بدَّلت معالمها بشكل جذري. الفيلم- تمَّ تصويره على مدار خمسة أعوام – بمثابة رحلة تأملية لاكتشاف الذات. يتعقب « أمل » محاولات بطلته الشابة (من سن الخامسة عشرة حتى العشرين) لتحديد هويتها وإيجاد مكانٍ لها وسط مجتمعٍ ذكوري بامتياز. وبينما تكبر، تكتشف أمل مدى محدودية خياراتها كأنثى شابة تعيش في بلد عربي في زمن ما بعد الثورة
