En 1984, des milliers d’Africains de 26 pays frappés par la famine se retrouvent dans des camps au Soudan. A l’initiative d’Israël et des Etats-Unis, une vaste action est menée pour emmener des milliers de Juifs éthiopiens vers Israël.
Une mère chrétienne pousse son fils de neuf ans à se déclarer juif pour le sauver de la famine et de la mort. L’enfant arrive en Terre Sainte. Déclaré orphelin, il est adopté par une famille française sépharade vivant à Tel-Aviv. Il grandit avec la peur que l’on découvre son double-secret et mensonge : ni juif, ni orphelin, seulement noir. Il découvrira l’amour, la culture occidentale, la judaïté mais également le racisme et la guerre dans les territoires occupés.

With Israeli and U.S. assistance, from November 20, 1984, to January 4, 1985, a mass exodus bringing thousands of Ethiopian Jews to the Promised Land is organized. One mother forces her young son to join this mass in order to save him from famine and death, even though neither he nor his mother is a descendant of the ancient tribes of Israel. Nevertheless, having managed to pass himself off as an orphan, the boy is transferred to Israel, where he is adopted by a French, Sephardic family living in Tel Aviv. There he grows up with the constant fear that someone will uncover his secrets: that he is neither Jewish nor an orphan – to others, just black. Through the years he will come to know love, Judaism and Western Culture as well as racism and the war in the Occupied Territories. He will become many things – Jewish, Israeli, French – but will never forget his real mother and true identity: an Ethiopian who escaped death.

Etiopia. Grazie all’iniziativa dello stato di Israele e degli Stati Uniti, una vasta azione è organizzata dal 20 novembre 1984 al 4 gennaio 1985 per portare in Israele migliaia di ebrei etiopi (i Falashas).

Una madre etiope non-ebrea spinge suo figlio a dichiararsi ebreo per salvarlo dalla carestia e della morte, mentre in realtà nessuno dei due è un discendente del popolo d’Israele. Dichiarato orfano, è adottato da una famiglia francese sefardita che vive a Tel-Aviv. Cresce con la paura che qualcuno scopra il suo segreto e le sue menzogne: né ebreo, né orfano, solo nero.

Conoscerà l’amore, il giudaismo e la cultura occidentale ma anche il razzismo e la guerra nei territori occupati. Diventerà ebreo – israeliano – francese – tunisino, senza mai dimenticare sua vera madre e quello che è veramente: un etiope scampato alla morte.
