Né à Tunis, Major de promotion en cinéma spécialisation en réalisation et scénario de l’université de La Manouba à Tunis. À son passage à Paris, il est formé en réalisation cinématographique à l’école supérieure d’études cinématographiques. Comédien de Théâtre avec la compagnie d’El Teatro à Tunis pendant deux ans. Il a interprété plusieurs rôles au théâtre et au cinéma notamment dans son film « Les blanches ailes de la mort », film expérimental primé dans des festivals et sélectionné aux journées du film européen de Tunis. Il est aussi auteur d’un moyen-métrage de fiction « Le dernier minuit », film en noir et blanc en hommage à la nouvelle vague, produit par Elokami productions (Paris) et réalisé entre Paris, Tunis et Le Caire.
Il a aussi réalisé deux films en 16mm, « Instant coupable » et « The Graduate ». Il est aussi poète populaire en Tunisie grâce à ses poèmes en dialectal tunisien, et aussi auteur d’un roman en arabe « Le cheval sur la plaine » et de plusieurs critiques littéraires sur Samuel Beckett et Antonin Artaud.
Il travaille également sur l’adaptation cinématographique du roman événement « Les derniers juifs d’Alexandrie », avec l’auteur du roman égyptien. Il prépare l’édition de son essai sur le conflit israélo-palestinien, intitulé « T’erre ».
Il vit et travaille entre Paris, Tunis et Le Caire.

« Avanti » sera son premier long-métrage et porte sur la liberté, est en cours de tournage. Il sortira fin 2014 en France et en Tunisie.
Le film raconte l’histoire de cinq jeunes étudiantes au lendemain du 14 janvier, interprétés par Baya Mudhaffer, Khouloud Jlidi, Nadia Zarrougui, Inès Arsi et Amal Fellah. Nadia, 19 ans, opératrice dans un centre d’appels, se rend compte qu’elle est enceinte de son copain rappeur absent. Elle partage une colocation avec quatre autres jeunes étudiantes qui ont toutes moins de vingt ans : Inès, Kali, Baya et Chris.
Dans un Tunis tourmenté par une actualité politique tendue, la grossesse de Nadia vient perturber le quotidien déjà chaotique des protagonistes. Chacune se remet en question, et pendant une semaine, elles décident de tout régler avec leur propre passé.

En 2016, il sort son premier long métrage de fiction « Thala Mon Amour », une histoire d’amour qui se déroule pendant la révolution tunisienne. Il cofonde avec Moufida Fedhila à Tunis Yol Film House et produit plusieurs films de fiction et documentaires primés dans plusieurs festivals internationaux. En 2019, il participe à La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde du Festival de Cannes avec le long métrage documentaire « Fouledh ». Il réalise son deuxième long métrage de fiction « Streams » (2021, Première Mondiale à Locarno 2021).
Mehdi Hmili fait partie de la nouvelle vague de jeunes cinéastes tunisiens et il est une figure majeure du paysage cinématographique tunisien actuel. Sa société de production Yol Film House joue un rôle actif dans le soutien des talents tunisiens et ses productions ont un fort potentiel de coproduction et de distribution internationale. Mehdi Hmili est un Torino Film Lab Alumni. Il vit et travaille entre Tunis et Paris.

Tunisian film director, screenwriter, producer and poet.

He studied film directing in Tunisia and graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema in Paris. He is an actor, writer and director obtained several awards ans played several roles in theater and films including the movie « White wings of death », winning awards in film festivals and was nominated for the days of European cinema.
He has also directed two films in 16 mm in France, « A moment of guilty » and « Superior » in which criticism of the status of Muslims in France, and the movie « The last midnight », a black and white drama about the difficulty of understanding the human relations.
Mehdi Hmili is also a popular poet, known in Tunisia with his satirical writings in Tunisian dialect.
He also wrote a novel in Arabic, « The horse on the plain. »

درس الإخراج السينمائي في تونس و تخرج من المعهد العالي للسينما في باريس. ممثل, سيناريست و مخرج شاب متحصل على جوائز عديدة. لعب عدة أدوار في المسرح والسينما بما في ذلك فيلم « أجنحة الموت البيضاء » ، الحائز على الجوائز والمهرجانات السينمائية و رشح لأيام السينما الأوروبية.
تولى ايضا اخراج فيلمين 16مم في فرنسا ، « لحظة مذنب » و « المتفوق » فيهما نقد لوضعية المسلمين في فرنسا و فيلم « آخر نص ليل »، و هو فيلم من انتاج فرنسي تونسي صور في تونس و باريس و يحكي بشاعرية عن صعوبة فهم العلاقات الانسانية.
وهو أيضا شاعر شعبي معروف في تونس بقصائده و كتاباته الساخرة باللهجة التونسية. كتب أيضا رواية باللغة العربية ، « الحصان على السهل ».
و هو يحضر حاليا لتصوير فيلمه الروائي الأول « باكوس »، و هو فيلم من انتاج فرنسي تونسي مصري مشترك ،تدور احداثه في مدينة الاسكندرية.
