Emir Berkane

Emir Berkane est un médecin, explorateur sous-marin, spéléologue, biologiste marin et militant environnemental algérien, dédié à la protection de la biodiversité méditerranéenne, notamment les requins.



Il préside la Fondation Probiom pour la protection de la biodiversité marine et coordonne les programmes GREBA (Grands Requins du Bassin Algérien) et Requin Méditerranée en Algérie. Berkane a cofondé l'hôpital privé El Amir en 2009 et investit dans l'agriculture biologique. Ambassadeur de la marque Mares, il contribue à des initiatives comme le déploiement de récifs artificiels et des lois de conservation marine. Il dirige le projet Mediterranean Great Sharks (GREBA) depuis 2015 pour étudier, marquer les espèces de requins et sensibiliser le public. Berkane soutient les récifs artificiels en Algérie, dont les premières immersions par Probiom. Il est impliqué dans la conservation des Nephrops (langoustine) via des expéditions marines, dans le cadre d'un travail plus large sur la biodiversité et la préservation des écosystèmes.



Emire Berkane produit des films documentaires pédagogiques comme "Les Maisons de la Mer" de Hamza Mendil, primé d'une Palme de Bronze au Festival mondial de l'image sous-marine, sur les récifs artificiels, des documentaires sur la conservation des requins et des films d'exploration et d'escalade sur les massifs montagneux de l'Algérie comme "Twïza, L'Aventure Algérienne" (2019), "Via Annaba" (2024), "Tissalatine, Le Rappel Du Hoggar" (2025).



En 2021, il publie le premier tome de ses carnets d'exploration : Les Mystères du Lac des Damnés, puis le second volume : Le Coeur des Roches en 2026 aux Editions Gap.

Emir Berkane is an Algerian physician, underwater explorer, caver, marine biologist, and environmental activist dedicated to protecting Mediterranean biodiversity, particularly sharks.



He chairs the Probiom Foundation for the protection of marine biodiversity and coordinates the GREBA (Great Sharks of the Algerian Basin) and Requin Méditerranée (Mediterranean Shark) programs in Algeria. Berkane co-founded the El Amir private hospital in 2009 and invests in organic farming. As a brand ambassador for Mares, he contributes to initiatives such as the deployment of artificial reefs and marine conservation legislation. He has led the Mediterranean Great Sharks (GREBA) project since 2015, focusing on studying and tagging shark species and raising public awareness. Berkane advocates for artificial reefs in Algeria, including the initial deployments carried out by Probiom. He is involved in the conservation of Nephrops (Norway lobster) through marine expeditions, as part of broader work on biodiversity and ecosystem preservation.



Emir Berkane produces educational documentaries—such as Hamza Mendil’s Les Maisons de la Mer (winner of a Bronze Palm at the World Festival of Underwater Images), which focuses on artificial reefs—as well as films on shark conservation and exploration/climbing expeditions in Algeria’s mountain ranges, including Twïza, L'Aventure Algérienne (2019), Via Annaba (2024), and Tissalatine, Le Rappel Du Hoggar (2025).



In 2021, he published the first volume of his exploration journals, Les Mystères du Lac des Damnés, followed by the second volume, Le Coeur des Roches, in 2026 (published by Éditions Gap).
