Tsjaads filmmaker Mahamat-Selah Haroun woont al dertig jaar in Frankrijk; Une saison en France is zijn eerste speelfilm die hij daar situeerde. Hij schetst daarin een melancholisch beeld van hoe illegale immigranten Frankrijk ervaren. Over de loop van een seizoen volgen we de alleenstaande vader Abbas (Eriq Ebouaney), die uit het oorlogsgebied van Bangui is gevlucht met zijn zoon en dochter. Terwijl deze weduwnaar rouwt om zijn omgekomen vrouw, werkt hij aan een nieuw leven.

Met de beste intenties verkoopt hij fruit voor een mager loon, verschijnt hij bij overheidsafspraken, ontwikkelt hij een relatie met zijn vriendin en zorgt hij voor zijn kinderen. En toch wordt hij – in Bangui een docent Frans – in Frankrijk beschouwd als tweederangsburger die uitgezet moet worden. Haroun laat zien hoe hoop wegebt uit Abbas’ leven en hoe tot hem doordringt dat hij en zijn kinderen nergens meer welkom zijn. Ebouaney weet die neerwaartse spiraal perfect te belichamen.
