Hala Elkoussy

Réalisatrice, artiste plasticienne et photographe égyptienne.



Hala Elkoussy est née le 10 juin 1974, à Guizeh (Le Caire, Egypte). Elle est diplômée du Goldsmiths College, à Londres, en 2001. En 2004, elle co-fonde le Contemporary Image Collective (CiC), un collectif d’artistes visuels, basé au Caire. En 2006, elle boucle une résidence de deux ans au Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten à Amsterdam et en 2010, elle gagne le Prix Abraaj Capital Art. En 2013, Elkoussy publie son premier livre, un journal photographique sur la vie urbaine après la Révolution égyptienne. Cactus Flower / Fleur de Cactus (2017) est son premier long métrage fiction. Elkoussy vit et travaille au Caire et à Amsterdam. Le projet de ce film avait été présenté au Festival de cinéma de Rotterdam 2015 (programme Art:Film – Cinémart).



Après des études à l’Université américaine du Caire et une maîtrise du Goldsmith College à l’Université de Londres en 2002, Hala Elkoussy donne des conférences et organise des expositions de photographies et de vidéos. Elle produit un certain nombre de courts métrages. Ses œuvres font partie des collections de la Tate Modern, du Stedelijk Museum et du Bristol Museum of Fine Arts. En 2004, elle cofonde le Contemporary Image Collective et lance en 2014 Fotomasr, une archive dédiée à la photographie égyptienne. En 2017, son premier long métrage, Cactus Flower est présenté au Festival de Rotterdam. Elle remporte le prix de la meilleure actrice au Festival de Dubaï.

Hala Elkoussy (10-6-1974, Guiza, EG) was born in Cairo in 1974. She studied at the American University before completing an MA in Image and communication at Goldsmiths College, University in London. She lectured on photography in 2002-2003. In 2004, she co-founded the Contemporary Image Collective – CiC, an artist-run initiative dedicated to the visual image, based in Cairo. In 2006, she completed a two year residency at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 2010, Elkoussy was a recipient of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize. Most recently, her feature film treatment entitled « Cactus Flower » was granted development funding by the Hubert Bals Fund, Rotterdam Film Festival. Elkoussy’s work delves into intimate and overlooked sides of communal living to highlight the underlying dynamics at play within the complex urban structure that is Cairo.
