El Gouna, 21 septembre 2021 : Dans le cadre de ses efforts constants pour présenter les meilleures œuvres que le cinéma international a à offrir, le Festival du film d’El Gouna (GFF) a le plaisir d’annoncer la sélection d’une variété de films internationaux qui seront présentés lors de sa très attendue 5ème édition, prévue du 14 au 22 octobre 2021, dans la station balnéaire d’ El Gouna.
Le nombre accru de films sortis dans les festivals internationaux de cinéma cette année a facilité le processus de sélection. Cela est particulièrement notable compte tenu de la diversité des styles artistiques, des thèmes et de la variation géographique en plus d’un équilibre entre la sélection de films de réalisateurs mondialement distingués et de cinéastes en herbe dont les films ont connu des succès récents et ont acquis une renommée au sein de la communauté cinématographique internationale.
Issus de la compétition officielle du Festival international du film de Venise 2021, deux films français participent au GFF : Another World de Stéphane Brizé et Happening d’Audrey Diwan.
Another World raconte l’histoire de Philippe, cadre pour un conglomérat industriel, alors qu’il fait face à un moment difficile qui met sa vie, sa famille et sa carrière sur le fil du rasoir et le pousse à faire des choix difficiles à tous les niveaux. Tandis que le lauréat du Lion d’or du Festival international du film de Venise 2021 Happening s’intéresse à Anne, une jeune femme française qui tente d’obtenir un avortement alors illégal dans la France des années 1960.
Également issu de la compétition officielle du Festival international du film de Venise 2021, Sundown du réalisateur mexicain Michel Franco. Présentant le retour attendu du réalisateur, le film met en vedette Tim Roth, qui joue le rôle de Neil Bennet, un riche Britannique en vacances avec sa famille dans une station balnéaire de luxe à Acapulco, tout en ayant l’air de ne manquer de rien.
Suivant la coutume des films de Franco, les événements du film s’intensifient et se déroulent progressivement sans être divulgués par le dialogue via un décès dans la famille, obligeant Neil à rentrer chez lui, ce qu’il tente de repousser.
De Finlande, GFF a confirmé la participation de L’aveugle qui ne voulait pas voir Titanic de Teemu Nikki, un film extraordinaire sur Jaakko, un homme aveugle et en fauteuil roulant qui veut rencontrer sa petite amie Sirpa, qui vit loin. Malgré son handicap extrême et le fait qu’il n’a jamais quitté sa maison sans aide, Jaakko décide d’accepter le risque, transformant ce qui semble être un voyage ordinaire en un road-trip extraordinaire, qui a remporté le prix du public au Festival international du film de Venise 2021.
Un autre film participant au GFF est Compartment No.6 de Juho Kuosmanen, qui se déroule entièrement dans un compartiment de train, dans lequel un lien humain extrêmement privé se forme entre une jeune femme finlandaise et un mineur russe. Malgré le fait qu’ils ne semblent pas se ressembler à l’extérieur, le voyage révèle leur aspiration à un lien humain. Ce film a remporté le Grand Prix du Festival de Cannes 2021.
Réalisé par le célèbre réalisateur chinois Zhang Yimou, One Second, qui a fait l’ouverture du Festival international du film de San Sebastián 2021, est une autre addition au GFF. Se déroulant pendant la Révolution culturelle en Chine, le film raconte l’histoire d’un prisonnier non identifié qui s’échappe d’un camp de travail et risque tout pour retrouver une bobine de film volée sur laquelle figure un clip de sa fille perdue depuis longtemps. Au cours de son périple, il rencontre une orpheline malheureuse, hantée par sa propre perte.
De Croatie, le film Murina d’Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović participe également au festival. Le film tourne autour de la visite d’un vieil ami de la famille qui rompt l’isolement d’un père et de sa fille sur une île croate, alors que les tensions montent. Le film a remporté la Caméra d’or au Festival de Cannes 2021.
Autre ajout du Festival de Cannes 2021, Unclenching the Fists de Kira Kovalenko, qui raconte l’histoire d’une jeune femme qui lutte pour se libérer de l’étouffoir de sa famille dans une ancienne ville minière d’Ossétie du Nord, malgré le fait qu’elle aime sa famille autant qu’elle la rejette.
Participe également au GFF le film le plus récent de Jacques Audiard, Les Olympiades, qui a été présenté au Festival de Cannes 2021. L’histoire du film se déroule à Paris, où Émilie rencontre Camille, qui est attirée par Nora, qui se lie soudainement d’amitié avec Amber. Trois filles et un garçon redéfinissent ce que signifie vraiment l’amour à l’ère moderne.
Gagnant de l’Ours d’argent du meilleur réalisateur au Festival international du film de Berlin 2021, Lumière naturelle de Dénes Nagy. Situé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le film raconte l’histoire d’un simple fermier qui travaille comme soldat dans l’armée hongroise et finit par être témoin d’un horrible massacre de masse.
Enfin, le film I Am Your Man de la célèbre actrice et réalisatrice allemande Maria Schrader fait également partie de la sélection. Le film raconte l’histoire d’Alma, chercheuse au célèbre musée de Pergame, qui se laisse convaincre de participer à une recherche exceptionnelle pour obtenir sa bourse de recherche. Dans le cadre de cette recherche, Alma devra passer trois semaines avec un robot humanoïde conçu pour s’adapter à sa personnalité et à ses besoins, doté de l’intelligence artificielle nécessaire pour être son parfait compagnon.

El Gouna, September 21, 2021: As part of its enduring efforts to showcase the best works that international cinema has to offer, El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) is delighted to announce the selection of a variety of international films that will be shown in its highly anticipated 5th edition, scheduled to take place from October 14 – 22, 2021, in the resort town of El Gouna.
The increased number of films that were released at international film festivals this year facilitated the selection process. This is especially noticeable given the diversity in artistic styles, themes, and geographical variation in addition to a balance between selecting films by globally distinguished directors and aspiring filmmakers whose films have achieved recent successes and garnered renown within the international film community.
From the official competition of the 2021 Venice International Film Festival, two French films are participating in GFF: Stéphane Brizé’s Another World and Audrey Diwan’s Happening.
Another World tells the story of Philippe, an executive for an industrial conglomerate, as he faces a difficult moment that puts his life, family and career on the edge and pushes him to make choices that are difficult on all levels. While the 2021 Venice International Film Festival Golden Lion winner Happening revolves around Anne, a young French woman who tries to get a then-illegal abortion in 1960’s France.
Also from the 2021 Venice International Film Festival official competition, Mexican director Michel Franco’s Sundown. Showcasing the director’s awaited return, the film stars Tim Roth, who plays the role of Neil Bennet, the rich Briton vacationing with his family at a luxury resort in Acapulco, while seemingly appearing like he wants for nothing.
Following the custom of Franco’s films, the film’s events escalate and gradually unfold without being disclosed through dialogue via a death in the family, forcing Neil to return home, which he tries to postpone.
From Finland, GFF has confirmed the participation of Teemu Nikki’s The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic, an extraordinary film about Jaakko, a blind and wheelchair-bound man who wants to meet his girlfriend Sirpa, who lives far away. Despite his extreme disability and the fact that he has never left his house without help, Jaakko decides to accept the risk, transforming what seems like an ordinary trip into an extraordinary road-trip film, which won the Audience Award at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival.
Another film participating in GFF is Juho Kuosmanen’s Compartment No.6, which takes place entirely in a train compartment, in which an extremely private human bond forms between a young Finnish woman and a Russian miner. Despite the fact that they don’t seem similar on the outside, the trip reveals their longing for a human connection. This film won the Grand Prix at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
Made by the famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, One Second, which opened at the 2021 San Sebastián International Film Festival, is another addition to GFF. Set during the Cultural Revolution in China, the film tells the story of an unidentified prisoner who escapes from a labor camp and risks everything to find a stolen film reel that features a clip of his long-lost daughter. On his journey, he meets a miserable orphan girl, haunted by her own loss.
