1996, l’ancien colonel de l’OAS Raoul Duplan est abattu sans aucun mobile apparent d’une balle en pleine tête dans sa propriété. Des lettres anonymes laissent entendre que quatre personnes qui ont connu Duplan pendant l’été 1957, en pleine guerre d’Algérie, alors qu’il commandait la garnison de Saint-Arnaud, une ville près de Constantine, savent pourquoi il a été assassiné. Les lettres se terminent toutes par : « le Colonel est mort à Saint-Arnaud. »
1956, en pleine guerre d’Algérie, Guy Rossi, vingt ans, licence de droit en poche, résilie son sursis et arrive à Saint-Arnaud, sous le commandement direct de Duplan. Ce militaire a une vision bien particulière de sa mission : « ni pacification, ni maintien de l’ordre, je fais la guerre ». Subjugué par le personnage, Rossi ne va pas se rendre compte de sa métamorphose.

On the rebound from a love affair gone wrong, young Guy Rossi, a law graduate, has enlisted to serve before call-up has even been announced. Aide-de-camp to Colonel Duplan, who commands the Saint-Arnaud garrison in the east of Algeria, Rossi’s mission is to study the latitude provided to the army by the special powers that have been unanimously voted in by the National Assembly. « No measures, not even those contrary to the greater principles of our laws, are to be ruled out, » Rossi concludes. This blank endorsement will lead to their ruin… in Algeria, and forty years later in France.

あらすじ
パリ、現在。
元大佐ラウル・デュプランが彼の家で頭に銃弾を受けた状態で発見された。捜査はまったく進展が見えなかった、匿名の手紙（「大佐はサン・アルノーで死亡した」-　1957年、サン・アルノー、アルジェリア）が届くまでは。
若いギー・ロッシ（法学士）は失恋によって徴兵年齢以前に志願入隊していた。アルジェリア東部に位置するサン・アルノーの駐留地を指揮していたデュプラン大佐の基地の副官として、ロッシは国民議会が全会一致で採択した特権を与えるという自由を調査するという任務についた。「どんな方策も、それがたとえ私たちの権利の大原則に反するものであっても排除できない」とロッシは結論づけた。この白紙委任状が彼らを敗北へと追いやった・・、ひとりはアルジェリアで、そしてもう一人は４０年後にフランスで。
