Margarida Cardoso (Portugal, 1963) obtient un diplôme en communication Audiovisuelle à l’école Antonio Arrorio.
Entre 1983 et 1996, elle travaille en tant que script et assistant-réalisateur sur plus de 40 films Portugais et internationaux.

Portuguese filmmaker and professor.

Margarida Cardoso is an independent filmmaker. Since 2005 she is a teacher in the film BA degree course at Lusófona University, Lisbon.

She concluded the course « Imagem e Comunicação Audiovisual » at the António Arroio art school in Lisbon, and worked for several years in France and Portugal, as assistant director, camera assistant and script assistant in more than 50 feature films.

In 1995 she started directing her own films, exploring subjects which cross her personal history experiences and prominent issues in recent Portuguese history, such as, the colonial war in Africa, the revolution, and the post-colonialism years. The documentaries « Natal 71 » and « Kuxa Kanema – O Nascimento do Cinema », and the feature film « A Costa dos Murmúrios », are amongst her best known films, and all relate to her experience in colonial and post-colonial Portuguese Africa.

Her films were screened in many festivals, such as Rotterdam, Venice, and Locarno where she was given the award « Leopard de Demain » in 1999.

She has been a regular guest speaker in conferences, master classes and workshops in several countries all over the world. She has been invited as jury member in many festivals, such as DocLisboa International Documentary Film Festival, and Vila do Conde International Short Film Festival.

Within the Doc Nomads program, Margarida Cardoso is involved in the development of the DocNomads-Lisbon curriculum and is a leading instructor in courses of the 1st and 4th semesters.

The documentaries « Christmas 71″ and « Kuxa Kanema -The Birth of Cinema « , and the feature films « The Murmuring Coast » and « Yvone Kane » are amongst her best known films, and all relate to her experience in colonial and post-colonial Portuguese Africa.

Her films were screened in many festivals, such as Rotterdam, Venice, and Locarno where she was awarded with « Leopard de Demain » in 1999.

In 2005, Margarida Cardoso received the title of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry for her contribution towards spreading Portuguese culture.

Português

Nasceu em Tomar, Portugal (1963) e viveu em Moçambique até 1975.

Estudou Imagem e Comunicação Audiovisual na escola António Arroio, em Lisboa. Trabalhou vários anos em França e Portugal como fotógrafa e assitente de realização. Desde1995 que desenvolve um trabalho muito pessoal entre a ficção e o documentário.

Foi premiada com o « Léopards de Demain » no 52º Festival de Locarno e a sua primeira longa metragem « A Costa dos Murmúrios » estreou no Festival de Veneza – Venice Days, 2004. Nos últimos anos afirmou-se como um dos nomes mais consistentes do cinema português. « Natal 71 », « Kuxa Kanema – O Nascimento do Cinema », « A Costa dos Murmúrios » e a sua última longa metragem « Yvone Kane » têm em comum o interesse pela temática colonial e pós-colonial, numa perspectiva muito singular, explorando a memória, a perca e a culpa.

Em 2005 recebeu a comenda da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique.
