Le matin des obsèques de Guelwaar, grande figure de la résistance et défenseur d’une Afrique non corrompue, on s’aperçoit que son corps a disparu de la morgue. Après des recherches, on se rend compte qu’il s’agit d’une banale erreur administrative. Une puissante famille musulmane s’est trompée de cadavre et a enterré la dépouille de Guelwaar, le leader catholique, dans le cimetière musulman. Pour résoudre cette situation, l’intervention des autorités sera nécessaire. La communauté musulmane et la communauté catholique vont se dresser l’une contre l’autre en revendiquant, chacune, la propriété du cadavre…

When the body of Guelwaar (« the noble one »), a political activist, philanderer, and pillar of the Christian community, is mistakenly buried in a Muslim cemetery, the result is a perfect storm of bureaucratic red tape, family disputes, and religious conflict. As usual with Sembene, Guelwaar is many films in one: black comedy, political allegory, social satire, family drama, and, at the end, thunderous indictment of the twin evils of homegrown African corruption and neocolonial Western aid.

Guelwaar, a proud man, was rejecting corruption and neo-imperialism (which kill senegalese and african pride), is buried in a Muslim cemetary. His family, his community will face a religious conflict. Guelwaar is a Christian.
