Yousry Nasrallah est né en 1952 au Caire (Egpte). Il obtient une maîtrise à la faculté d’Economie et Sciences Politiques à l’Université du Caire. Puis il dirige ses pas vers l’Institut du Cinéma du Caire en 1973.

Entre 1978 et 1982 il travaille en tant que critique de cinéma au quotidien libanais « As-Safir » (al-Safir). A partir de 1982, il est l’assistant de Youssef Chahine sur La Mémoire (1982), sur « Adieu Bonaparte » (1984), « Alexandrie, encore et toujours » (1990) et « Le Caire raconté par Youssef Chahine ».
Il est, par ailleurs, le co-scénariste de deux de ses films. C’est en 1987 qu’il réalise son premier long métrage de fiction Vols d’été, présenté la même année à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs à Cannes. En 1993, il signe Mercedes, son second long métrage, et en 1999, La Ville. Il est également l’auteur d’un documentaire intitulé À propos des garçons, des filles et du voile, pour la chaîne de télévision européenne Arte et de La Porte du Soleil, long métrage de fiction adapté du roman éponyme de l’écrivain libanais Élias Khoury. Le film a été réalisé entre 2002 et 2004 et présenté en sélection officielle, hors compétition, au Festival de Cannes 2004.

Biographie (Cannes 2022)
Cinéaste égyptien, Yousry Nasrallah suit des études en Économie et Sciences politiques à l’université du Caire puis devient critique de cinéma et assistant-réalisateur à Beyrouth. En 1982, de retour au Caire, il travaille avec Youssef Chahine sur Adieu Bonaparte, dont la société de production, Misr International Films, soutiendra ses premiers films. En 1988, il réalise son premier long métrage, Vols d’été (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs). S’en suivront Mercedes (1993), sélectionné au Festival de Locarno, À propos des garçons, des filles et du voile (1995), documentaire sur la jeunesse égyptienne, puis La Ville (1999) récompensé du Prix spécial du Jury à Locarno. En 2004, La Porte du soleil adapté du roman éponyme d’Elias Khoury, est présenté en Sélection officielle au Festival de Cannes. Il poursuit son travail avec L’Aquarium (2008) et Femmes du Caire (2009) présenté à la Mostra de Venise. En 2011, il participe au film 18 jours, composé de plusieurs courts métrages (segment Intérieur/ Extérieur) et présenté en l’honneur de l’année de l’Égypte au Festival de Cannes. Il revient en Sélection officielle en Compétition l’année suivante avec Après la bataille. Son dernier film Le Ruisseau, le pré vert et le doux visage a été présenté en Compétition officielle au Festival de Locarno en 2016.

Born in Cairo in 1952
He studied statistics in the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, during which time he was active in the film club movement. From 1978-82 he worked in Beirut as a film critic. After collaborating on a project with documentary filmmaker Omar Amiralay, he worked as an assistant director for Youssef Chahine from 1982-85 on his film, ADIEU BONAPARTE. He has been a director in his own right since 1988 and has shown his work at numerous international film festivals ever since.

Egyptian filmmaker Yousry Nasrallah studied economics and political sciences at Cairo University and went on to become a film critic and assistant director in Beirut. Upon returning to Cairo in 1982, he worked with Youssef Chahine on Bonaparte in Egypt, with production company Misr International Films going on to produce his first films. He shot his first feature film Summer Thefts (Directors’ Fortnight) in 1988, following up with The Mercedes (1993) which was selected at the Locarno Film Festival, On Boys, Girls and the Veil (1995), a documentary about Egypt’s young people, and The City (1999), which was awarded Locarno’s Special Jury Prize. His eponymous book-to-screen adaptation of Elias Khoury’s novel The Gate of Sun was in the Festival de Cannes’ Official Selection in 2004. He went on to film The Aquarium (2008) and Scheherazade, Tell Me a Story (2009) which was screened at the Venice Film Festival. In 2011, his Interior/Exterior was included in 18 Days, an anthology of shorts screened at the Festival de Cannes in honour of Egypt. The following year he was back in the Official Selection, in Competition with After the Battle. His last film Brooks, Meadows and Lovely Faces was presented in Official Competition at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016

Geboren 1952 in Kairo.
Er studierte an der Fakultät für Wirtschafts- und Politische Wissenschaften, Fachrichtung Statistik, und engagierte sich in dieser Zeit in der Filmclub-Bewegung. 1978-82 arbeitete er in Beirut als Filmkritiker. Nach einer Zusammenarbeit 1981 mit dem Doku men – tarfilmer Omar Amiralay war er 1982-85 Regieassistent von Youssef Chahine bei dessen ADIEU BONAPARTE. Seit 1988 ist er Regisseur und war seither auf zahlreichen internationalen Festivals mit seinen Arbeiten vertreten.
