Diouana, giovane donna senegalese, segue i suoi padroni fino in Francia, col miraggio di una vita agiata in Costa Azzurra. Utilizzata all'inizio come governante finisce per diventare una semplice domestica tuttofare. Mai pagata e trattata come una schiava, la donna si rifiuta di mangiare e di lavorare finendo col subire un forte processo di alienazione e sviluppando una depressione che la condurrà al suicidio.Tratto da un suo racconto breve La Noire de… è il lungometraggio d'esordio di Sembène ed è considerato anche il primo dell'Africa subsahariana. Un film sulla fine del sogno e sull'impossibilità della fuga, il ritratto di una donna che cerca di uscire dalla sua condizione di sottomissione ed emarginazione, ma rimane immobilizzata in un percorso rituale che non le darà scampo.
